Colorado Rep Manny Rutinel Under Fire for Past Animal Rights Advocacy and Child Sex Bill Vote

State Rep. Manny Rutinel, a Democrat campaigning for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, is facing renewed criticism over two separate controversies. Nearly a decade ago he posted on Reddit supporting a movement to give animals the same legal rights as people, advocating veganism and suggesting that animals should live in sanctuaries or as pets. Rutinel now says those views belong to his younger self, stating, “The views that I put in those posts when I was 22 are not my views today.”

In February 2024, Rutinel voted with seven other Democrats on the Colorado House State, Civic, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee to block House Bill 1092, which would have imposed mandatory prison terms for individuals convicted of buying, selling, or exploiting children for sex. He cited concerns that the bill could punish trafficking victims. Critics argue the vote, along with other legislative positions, shows a pattern of supporting policies they deem too lenient on serious crimes. The 8th District, home to a large meat‑packing industry, is expected to be one of the nation’s tightest congressional races and could influence party control of the U.S. House.
