Colorado requests $65 million for flood relief in southwest

The Colorado Department of Transportation has requested $65 million in federal emergency relief funds to repair highways damaged by severe flooding in the southwestern part of the state. The request, submitted to the Federal Highway Administration, aims to repair U.S. 160, U.S. 550, and Colorado Highway 151. Officials have also requested a $6.5 million “quick release” to begin immediate repairs, noting that the state has already approved $5 million in emergency funds.

Severe rainfall and flooding recently washed away bridges and roads, forcing several highway closures. While some routes have since reopened, officials cautioned that the $65 million estimate is preliminary. A more accurate assessment is expected in eight to ten weeks as crews gain full access to damaged structures.

The Colorado National Guard has been active in the region, conducting 14 aerial missions to rescue 28 people and several animals from stranded locations, including areas near Pagosa Springs. The flooding has left some residents without water or essential supplies and caused widespread infrastructure destruction.
