Colorado requests federal disaster aid for Aspen Acres and Gold Mountain fires
Colorado Governor Jared Polis has formally requested a Major Disaster Declaration from the federal government to assist in recovery efforts following the Aspen Acres and Gold Mountain fires. The request seeks assistance in three categories: Individual Assistance for homeowners, Public Assistance for local governments and utilities, and FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Funding for long-term disaster reduction.
The fires and subsequent flash flooding and debris flows have destroyed over 300 homes, caused more than $18 million in damage to public infrastructure, and resulted in one death. Local officials, including Pueblo County Sheriff David Lucero, stated that the compounding nature of the disasters has exceeded the capacity of local resources.
The request now moves through federal channels for recommendation before reaching the president. This follows two previous requests for disaster declarations in Colorado since August 2025 that were denied by the Trump administration.
