Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, has reached a historic low, with water levels recorded at 1,040.4 feet above sea level. This decline surpasses the previous record set in July 2022 and underscores a deepening crisis within the Colorado River system.

The shortage is driven by a combination of prolonged drought, rising temperatures, and an exceptionally low winter snowpack in the Rocky Mountains. These conditions threaten the water supply for approximately 40 million people across seven U.S. states, tribal nations, and Mexico, while also impacting agriculture, industry, and hydropower production.

In response to the crisis, federal officials have proposed emergency measures as several states—including California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah—have struggled to reach a long-term agreement on water sharing. Additionally, to prioritize hydropower stability, officials have decided against releasing cool water from Lake Powell to protect the habitat of the threatened humpback chub fish.
