Colorado Rockies ownership remains with Monfort family despite sale rumors
Colorado Rockies president Walker Monfort has denied rumors that the Penner Sports Group intends to acquire a majority stake in the team. Despite reports suggesting Greg Penner and Carrie Walton-Penner might purchase an additional 35 percent of the franchise, Monfort stated at a recent press conference that the Penners remain partners rather than future controlling owners.
The initial 40 percent stake purchased by the Penner Sports Group for $700 million provided the Rockies with necessary capital to address debts incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic and losses from regional sports network revenue.
Separately, the Rockies face potential offseason uncertainty due to looming negotiations between Major League Baseball owners and the MLB Players Association. If a new collective bargaining agreement is not reached by December 1, a lockout could stall major league operations. During such a period, the organization's focus may shift toward its minor league system, where players remain under a different agreement. Within the farm system, second baseman Roc Riggio is noted as a prospect who could significantly influence the team's roster planning for the upcoming season.
