Colorado school districts propose closures amid declining enrollment

School districts in Colorado are considering significant restructuring and closures due to declining student enrollment and demographic shifts.

The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) has proposed a plan to close four elementary schools and four buildings, affecting 16 schools through mergers, relocations, or grade changes. The proposal aims to ensure schools maintain at least three classes per grade level to secure fuller staffing and resources, such as counselors and specialized teachers. If approved by the school board, these changes would take effect in the 2027-28 school year.

Similarly, the Poudre School District (PSD) is weighing consolidations as it faces approximately 10,000 empty seats. Enrollment is projected to drop by another 2,500 students by 2031, driven by lower birth rates and housing shortages. District officials noted that smaller schools are significantly more expensive to operate, costing roughly $19,000 per student compared to $6,500 at fuller schools. Superintendent Brian Kingsley stated that consolidation could help maintain essential programs like art, music, and gifted services.
