Colorado Snow and Avalanche Workshop held in Breckenridge
More than 500 avalanche professionals and backcountry enthusiasts gathered in Breckenridge for the 25th annual Colorado Snow and Avalanche Workshop (CSAW). Hosted by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and its nonprofit partner, Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the event serves as a seasonal gateway for those preparing for the upcoming winter.
Participants included a diverse range of professionals, such as ski resort patrollers, avalanche technicians, backcountry guides, search and rescue teams, and federal agency forecasters. The workshop featured technical presentations, including a session by a U.S. Geological Survey scientist on a digital tool for estimating avalanche size and research from a Montana State University doctoral student regarding snow stability and weak layer collapse.
