Colorado and California voters face major ballot initiatives in November
Voters in several U.S. states, most notably Colorado and California, will face numerous ballot initiatives on November 3 addressing criminal justice, taxation, and social issues.
In Colorado, several propositions are under debate. Proposition 132 seeks to increase criminal penalties for the manufacture and distribution of synthetic opiates like fentanyl. Propositions 134 and 135 involve controversial measures regarding gender identity in sports and medical procedures for minors, drawing both religious support and progressive opposition. Tax-related measures include Amendment 87, which proposes a graduated income tax, and Proposition NN, which would allow the state to retain billions in tax revenue to fund K-12 education by adjusting the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) limits. Additionally, Proposition 137 would redirect outdoor equipment sales taxes toward wildfire mitigation and conservation.
In California, Propositions 41 and 43 aim to curb new taxes by addressing the Gann Limit and requiring audits for new special taxes.
Nationally, these measures reflect a trend toward more punitive criminal justice policies, with several states weighing increased penalties for drug offenses and human trafficking. The shift occurs as federal priorities also emphasize stricter law enforcement and immigration policies.
