Colorectal cancer awareness: Recognizing key gastrointestinal warning signs
Medical professionals are highlighting the importance of recognizing specific gastrointestinal symptoms as potential indicators of colorectal cancer. In one case, a volunteer seeking treatment for insomnia was diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer after a practitioner noticed abnormal dark discoloration in the ear area, which in traditional Chinese medicine is linked to the large intestine. The patient also reported chronic diarrhea with traces of blood and mucus.
Another case involved an 80-year-old woman who sought treatment for hemorrhoids but experienced tenesmus—the sensation of needing to pass stool despite an empty bowel. A physical examination revealed a tumor.
Doctors warn that while symptoms like tenesmus can be caused by infections, inflammatory bowel disease, or hemorrhoids, they should be taken seriously when accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, anemia, or sudden changes in bowel habits. Medical experts emphasize that while physical observations like skin or ear color changes can serve as prompts, definitive diagnosis requires clinical procedures such as colonoscopies and pathological testing.
