Colorectal cancer incidence rises in Nigeria
Medical professionals in Nigeria are reporting an exponential increase in colorectal cancer cases. Dr. Olusegun Alatise, a professor of surgery at the Obafemi Awolowo University teaching hospital, notes that while the disease was previously considered rare in sub-Saharan Africa, his facility now sees cases weekly.
There is a significant disparity in survival rates between Nigeria and Western nations. While two in three patients in the US and Western Europe survive at least five years post-diagnosis, only one in five patients in Nigeria reaches that milestone.
Experts attribute this gap to late-stage diagnosis. Many patients in the Ile-Ife region report neglecting symptoms such as rectal bleeding or misinterpreting stomach pain as ulcers or appendicitis, often seeking hospital care only after the cancer has spread.
