Rome establishes ‘red zone’ around Colosseum to boost security
Authorities in Rome have designated the area surrounding the Colosseum and the adjacent Roman Forum as a ‘red zone’ to combat rising crime and violence. The security measures, enacted by the Prefecture of Rome, are scheduled to remain in effect until December 24.
The decision follows an increase in reports of robberies, pickpocketing, drug trafficking, and violent confrontations. One notable incident in July involved a group of approximately 50 youths attacking police officers with fireworks. To enhance safety for residents and tourists, the new regulations include a 24-hour police and military presence, increased patrols, and the authority to issue expulsion orders.
Prefect Lamberto Giannini stated that the measures aim to ensure the public space remains available for all while addressing issues of urban decay and crime. The ordinance also extends to the ‘Colosseo’ stop on the Metro Line C. The Prefecture noted that many offenses are reportedly committed by young groups of non-EU origin. This initiative is part of a broader trend of establishing security zones in other major Italian cities, including Milan, Naples, Florence, and Bologna.
