Colpensiones faces multi-trillion peso deficit due to minimum wage hike

Colpensiones faces a significant fiscal deficit for 2026, driven by a mismatch between projected and actual minimum wage increases. The Contraloría General de la República has warned of a potential shortfall exceeding $4.2 trillion pesos to meet pension obligations for the remainder of the year.

While the initial budget was based on a projected minimum wage increase of approximately 7.5%, the actual increase was set at 23%, bringing the 2026 minimum wage to $1,750,905. This discrepancy has created a substantial gap in the funds required to cover monthly payments for approximately 1.4 million Colombians.

Andrés Mauricio Velasco, president of Asofondes, estimated the budget gap to be closer to $5 trillion pesos. Minister of Labor Natalia López Fuentes noted that Colpensiones requires approximately $58 trillion pesos, leaving a $5 trillion peso shortfall specifically for November and December payments. The Contraloría has urged the national government to provide the necessary additional resources to ensure all pension obligations are met.
