Colson Montgomery sets MLB single-season strikeout record

Chicago White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery set a new Major League Baseball record for strikeouts in a single season, reaching 224 strikeouts during a game against the Colorado Rockies.

Montgomery surpassed the previous record of 223 strikeouts held by Mark Reynolds, who set the mark in 2009 while playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Montgomery reached the milestone in his 631st plate appearance. The 24-year-old has recorded 31 home runs and 87 RBIs this season.

The record-breaking performance occurred as the White Sox worked toward securing a postseason berth, having recently clinched a playoff spot following a win against the Kansas City Royals.
