Colton Herta remains one point short of F1 super licence
American racing driver Colton Herta is currently one point below the 40-point threshold required to obtain an FIA super licence, following administrative confusion during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.
Herta, who is being considered as a potential candidate for a Cadillac F1 seat in 2027, appeared to have secured the necessary points after completing over 100 kilometers during a first free practice session. However, the FIA confirmed he remains at 39 points due to a discrepancy in the IndyCar 2025 final standings.
The confusion stemmed from an error on the IndyCar website, which had initially listed Herta in sixth place. Following a tiebreaker rule involving the number of second-place finishes, Herta was officially ranked seventh, behind Felix Rosenqvist. This correction reduced his IndyCar points contribution for the 2025 season from six to four.
Herta’s current total consists of 35 points from IndyCar and four points earned from participating in Formula 1 free practice sessions. To reach the required 40 points, he will need to participate in at least one more official free practice session, with opportunities potentially available at the upcoming Grands Prix in São Paulo or Las Vegas.
