Colton Herta rules out return to Formula 2

American racing driver Colton Herta has indicated he has no intention of returning to Formula 2 for the 2027 season, effectively ending his current attempt to secure the license points necessary for a Formula 1 seat.

After moving from IndyCar to F2 with Hitech to gain European racing experience and bolster his candidacy for Cadillac’s future F1 entry, Herta has struggled significantly. He currently sits 19th in the championship standings. Following a difficult campaign marked by a lack of recent scoring finishes and a qualifying crash in Madrid, Herta stated, “I have no interest in another year of Formula 2.”

This decision leaves his Formula 1 ambitions in uncertainty, particularly regarding Cadillac’s desire to field an American driver. While a return to the United States and IndyCar is expected, many top-tier IndyCar seats are already occupied for 2027, potentially forcing Herta to negotiate with smaller teams. Meanwhile, Cadillac may look toward other candidates, such as Jack Crawford, to fulfill its goal of having an American driver in its lineup.
