Columbia police officer killed in South Carolina park shooting
A shooting at Southeast Park in Columbia, South Carolina, resulted in the death of 29-year-old police officer Christopher DeLong and the death of the suspect, 33-year-old Adam Tyler Dowdy.
According to Columbia Police Chief W. H. ‘Skip’ Holbrook, the incident began after a woman reported that a man, against whom she held a restraining order, was destroying property at her home. Officer DeLong responded to the initial call, and while the suspect had already left the residence, DeLong later spotted a person and vehicle matching the description near the park.
Officer David Dymock arrived as backup during the subsequent confrontation. Both officers were struck during the exchange. Dymock has since been released from the hospital to continue his recovery at home, while DeLong, who had been with the department for two years, succumbed to his injuries.
