Columbia River Vintage Hydroplane Crash Leaves No Injuries

During the Columbia Cup on the Kennewick side of the Columbia River, two vintage hydroplanes collided in a ceremonial heat. The Squire Shop boat veered into the path of the Pay n' Pak, briefly lifting the latter into the air before both vessels came to a stop and were towed back to the pits. Although the impact caused extensive damage to the boats' sponsons, no injuries were reported.

Officials did not release an official cause, but observers suggested the Squire Shop driver may have mistaken the larger unlimited‑course layout for a smaller Grand Prix course. The vintage racers, lacking radios and operating powerful 2,000‑3,000 hp Allison and Rolls‑Royce engines, navigate a complex buoy system that can be confusing for pilots. Fans expressed disappointment at the loss of the historic thunder boats' roar.
