Columbia Shuswap Regional District spends $80K on first dangerous dog case
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) spent $80,000 to resolve its first dangerous dog case involving a dog named Luna. Following a series of incidents, Luna was designated a dangerous dog and subsequently euthanized.
According to senior bylaw enforcement officer Chris Smit, the designation required a court application because the legal mechanism for seeking the destruction of a dangerous dog cannot be handled through administrative action alone. The case followed escalating incidents on the Silver Creek community trail, including serious injuries to two cyclists on June 19 and October 3, and a bite involving a pedestrian on June 21.
Staff reported that the property where the dog was kept had inadequate containment due to a dilapidated fence. The legal action was taken to address public safety risks after complaints continued to escalate despite previous warnings and enforcement efforts directed at the owners.
