Columbia University students face scrutiny over political activism

Columbia University student activists have drawn scrutiny following recent developments regarding their political stances and roles within the university.

Sean Eren, a master’s student and member of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) national steering committee, has been elected to the Columbia University Senate. Eren previously faced a campus ban in March 2024 after participating in an event with Samidoun, an organization classified as a terrorist group by Canada and Israel. During a 2024 event, Eren described Hamas’s communication networks as “inspirational.”

Separately, student Mahmoud Khalil has faced criticism after refusing to condemn Hamas during a CNN interview. Khalil characterized questions regarding his condemnation of the group as a “litmus test,” arguing that such inquiries are used to target Palestinians. The controversy surrounding these students highlights ongoing tensions regarding campus activism and university policy-making.
