Columbia University study urges hourly 5‑minute walks to boost workplace productivity
A large-scale study published in June 2026 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine examined the effects of short walking breaks on office workers. Researchers from Columbia University in New York tracked over 19,000 participants who took 5‑minute walking pauses at intervals of 30, 60 or 120 minutes. The results showed that a five‑minute break each hour delivered the best cost‑benefit balance, markedly improving mood, lowering fatigue, and modestly raising work engagement and productivity.
The study authors recommend practical ways to adopt hourly breaks, such as setting a "movement alarm," incorporating "walk‑and‑talk" meetings, using water‑bottle trips as prompts, choosing stairs over elevators, and parking farther from the office. These measures were deemed realistic for most workers while still delivering measurable health and performance benefits.
