Columbiana County to host free scrap tire collection event
The Columbiana County Health District has announced a free scrap tire collection event scheduled for October 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Columbiana County fairgrounds in Lisbon. The initiative aims to reduce mosquito breeding sites by removing tires that collect rainwater.
Participants are limited to 10 tires per person, which must be off the rim and restricted to passenger car and light truck tires. The program is funded by a $20,000 grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Mosquito Control Grant Program.
In addition to the tire collection, the district is providing free larvicides, specifically Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits manufactured by Summit Chemical, to county residents. These products can be picked up at the health district office during normal business hours. The district noted that mosquito-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus and various encephalitides, are present in Ohio.
