Coma-ruga flood prevention project to include submarine outfall
The El Vendrell City Council has announced a new project to construct a submarine outfall designed to prevent flooding in the Coma-ruga area. The project, managed by the local water company Aigües de El Vendrell, aims to evacuate stormwater from the lower part of Coma-ruga and the Brisamar residential area directly into the sea.
The decision to use a submarine outfall follows technical consultations between local government officials and various provincial services, including the Ministry of Environment (MITECO), the Generalitat de Catalunya, and the Ministry of Transport. Experts determined that discharging water directly into the open sea via the port's breakwaters would be more effective than previous plans involving large underground reservoirs.
The construction is expected to utilize the existing port access path. While the project may require modifications to previous plans—such as potentially relocating an underground reservoir from Plaza de los Enamorados to Plaza de Les Moreres—the Mayor, Kenneth Martínez, stated there are no major impediments to the work. The local administration confirmed that the costs will be covered by the water concessionaire, ensuring no direct impact on residents' water bills.
