Comcast turns millions of routers into motion sensors via WiFi Motion

Comcast has introduced a new service called Xfinity Shield, which includes a feature known as WiFi Motion. This technology allows compatible Xfinity Gateways to act as motion sensors by monitoring changes in radio frequency signals between the router and connected stationary devices. This method enables motion detection within a home without the use of cameras, images, or audio recording.

WiFi Motion is an opt-in, free feature for customers with supported router models, such as the Technicolor XB7 through XB10 and others. It offers three modes: Home Watch, Away Watch, and Dark Watch. While Comcast positions the tool as a security and awareness feature, it has sparked significant privacy concerns among users. Critics have expressed distrust regarding how the data is handled, noting that Comcast may be required to disclose motion-sensing data if served with a valid subpoena or court order.

Additionally, Xfinity Shield offers a paid tier called Shield Select for $15 per month, which includes AI-powered indoor cameras, door and window sensors, and cloud video storage.
