Comcast rolls out WiFi Motion home security feature

Comcast has begun rolling out Xfinity Shield, a new service suite for Xfinity Internet customers that includes a feature called WiFi Motion. This technology allows eligible users to detect movement within their homes without the need for additional cameras or sensors.

WiFi Motion works by monitoring disturbances in radio frequency signals as they travel between the Xfinity gateway and other fixed, connected devices, such as smart speakers, TVs, or thermostats. When a person moves through these signal paths, the software detects the change and sends a notification to the user via the Xfinity app. Users can customize the service by setting specific zones, scheduling active times, and configuring sensitivity levels.

Compatible hardware includes several Technicolor gateway models, such as the XB7, XB8, XB9, XB10, MXB1, and XER10, though CommScope XB7 units are excluded. While the service is provided at no extra charge, it has raised potential privacy considerations regarding the ability of broadband providers to log occupancy patterns and track movement data within a household.
