Comcast Xfinity routers now feature WiFi-based motion detection
Comcast has introduced a new feature called ‘Xfinity WiFi Motion’ as part of its Xfinity Shield security platform. The technology utilizes existing WiFi routers and up to five connected stationary devices to detect movement within a home by monitoring disruptions in radio frequency fields. Unlike traditional security systems, this method requires no cameras or microphones, instead using signal interference to identify when a person moves through a designated sensing area.
While the feature is presented as a free home security tool, its implementation raises privacy considerations. The service generates timestamped logs of detected movement, and terms of service indicate that Comcast may share this data with authorities without notifying subscribers. The technology is part of a broader industry trend in WiFi sensing, similar to systems used by other providers to detect human presence through signal disturbances.
