Comédie de Caen announces new season amid funding uncertainty

The Comédie de Caen has announced its 2026-2027 season, featuring classical texts, contemporary works, and two festivals. The upcoming programming includes an adaptation of Émile Zola’s novel, ‘Nana’.

However, the institution faces significant financial uncertainty following the French Ministry of Culture’s announcement of a 13% freeze on 2026 allocations for 28 cultural structures, including the Comédie de Caen. Additionally, the state has planned a reduction of at least 5% in operating subsidies for the following year.

Director Aurore Fattier noted that these budgetary constraints will lead to a decrease in the number of coproductions and performances. She expressed concern that artistic content is often treated as a ‘variable adjustment’ despite high attendance rates, and noted that the organization is currently campaigning for the culture budget to represent at least 1% of the total state budget.
