ComEd seeks $15 billion in rate hikes to strengthen Illinois electric grid

Despite billions in previous spending, power outages have persisted, affecting 2.4 million homes during storms this year. Some residents in Illinois suburbs have experienced outages lasting up to five days. The utility faces pressure to balance grid reliability with affordability as climate change contributes to more severe weather events.

In nearby Gary, Indiana, a storm with hurricane-like velocity caused two-week power outages, leading to legal action against NIPSCO for failing to protect infrastructure from tree damage. Sarah Moskowitz of the Citizens Utility Board noted that utilities must maintain systems cost-effectively to avoid disaster while preserving affordability.
