Comedian Ayo Makun Criticizes Church for Prioritising Public Image Over Faith

Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun, known as AY, disclosed that he stopped attending church for a period while dealing with a difficult personal season and negative stories circulating online. He later joined another congregation that initially invited him to take part in an upcoming programme, but the invitation was withdrawn after internal discussions due to concerns about his public perception.

Makun said the experience prompted him to question why public opinion appears to outweigh a person’s relationship with God, asking, “When did public opinion become stronger than one’s relationship with the altar and faith?” He urged churches to remain places of grace, truth and restoration, concluding with the question, “Who is the church really for?”
