Comedian Deniz Göktaş rearrested in Turkey on multiple charges

Turkish comedian Deniz Göktaş has been rearrested on multiple charges following a complex legal sequence. After being held for approximately 60 days, a court initially ordered his release on August 28 regarding charges of “insulting the president” and “publicly inciting hatred and hostility.”

However, prosecutors appealed the release, leading the Istanbul 28th High Criminal Court to issue a new arrest warrant. Göktaş is now facing three separate counts stemming from his stand-up performance, “Ölü Deniz” (Dead Sea). In addition to the original charges, he was also detained for “praising crime and criminals” after authorities determined certain jokes regarding a criminal group known as the “Daltonlar” constituted illegal praise of criminal activity.

Göktaş defended his remarks during a hearing via video link, arguing that his statements were intended as political satire and social commentary rather than criminal intent. He also noted that he voluntarily returned to Turkey despite the ongoing investigation, which he argued demonstrated a lack of flight risk. He remains held in the Karatepe High-Security Prison.
