Maluso, Basilan placed under Comelec control after discovery of pre-shaded ballots
During the first Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) discovered pre-shaded ballots in 36 of the 68 voting precincts in Maluso, Basilan. In response, the poll body has placed the municipality under Comelec control to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia stated that the commission has identified individuals allegedly responsible for the pre-shading and will hold them accountable. To rectify the issue, the commission ordered the emergency reprinting of ballots at the National Printing Office in Quezon City. These replacement ballots are being transported to Zamboanga and will be flown to Basilan via helicopter.
Due to the logistics of transporting the new ballots, Comelec may extend voting in the affected precincts until Tuesday, September 15. Garcia clarified that this would be a continuation of the elections rather than a formal postponement or resetting. While voting in Maluso faced potential delays, all other polling precincts in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have opened as scheduled.
