comico manga app to terminate service in January 2027

NHN comico has announced that its vertical-scroll manga service, comico, will terminate operations on January 6, 2027. The service, which launched in 2013, was a pioneer in the vertical-scroll format.

The shutdown will occur in stages. New title distributions, rental updates, coin sales, and new user registrations are scheduled to cease on August 31, 2026. Following this, the sale and rental of existing works will stop on September 28, 2026. After these dates, users will no longer be able to post new content to the user-driven ‘Challenge’ section.

To assist users, the company is preparing a migration service to transfer purchased works to the digital bookstore Mecha Comic. However, this transfer is only available for titles where publishers and rights holders have granted permission, meaning some works may not be eligible. Users must apply for this transfer during a specific period between January 7 and April 30, 2027. Additionally, unused paid coins can be refunded through an application process ending April 30, 2027. Detailed instructions regarding the migration process and refund procedures are expected to be released in September.
