Bangladesh child safety concerns rise after Cumilla student murder

The murder of 13-year-old Ishayat Shahriar Apratim in Cumilla has highlighted a growing crisis regarding child safety in Bangladesh. Apratim, a student at Border Guard Public School and son of a Cumilla University professor, went missing after leaving home with his mother's iPhone. His body was later recovered from a forested area near Lalmai Hill with signs of head trauma.

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the killing, including a primary suspect named Tuhin. The suspects have reportedly confessed to the crime in court, and the victim's mobile phone was recovered from the main suspect. Authorities believe the murder was motivated by the theft of the iPhone.

This incident follows a broader trend of violence and disappearances involving minors. Data from the human rights organization Ain-o-Salish Kendra (ASK) indicates that 254 children were killed in various incidents during the first eight months of 2026. Furthermore, police statistics show that between January and July, 15,717 children were reported missing across the country, with 2,038 remaining unrecovered.
