Commack High School coach investigated after helmet thrown at teen player

Suffolk County police are investigating an incident at Commack High School on Long Island involving an assistant football coach and a 16-year-old varsity player. According to the player’s parents, the assistant coach—a volunteer and the son of the head coach—threw a helmet at the teenager’s face “like a dart” during a summer practice on August 26.

The impact from the face mask caused the student to bleed heavily, requiring three stitches under his right eye. The teenager is also being evaluated for a potential concussion.

The boy’s parents, Laura and Cary Werner, expressed concerns regarding the safety and qualifications of the volunteer coach. As of Monday, no arrests have been made in connection with the altercation.
