Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick faces scrutiny over Kazakhstan tungsten deal
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is facing scrutiny regarding a strategic deal involving tungsten reserves in Kazakhstan. The transaction involves Kaz Resources Inc., a joint venture between the Kazakh state mining company Tau-Ken Samruk and a U.S. entity, with each holding a 70% share. The deal aims to secure tungsten, a critical metal for computer chips and military hardware, as China currently controls approximately 80% of the global supply.
The U.S. Export-Import Bank and the International Development Finance Corporation have granted preliminary approval for up to $1.6 billion in federal financing for the project. However, questions have been raised regarding potential conflicts of interest. Critics and Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have pointed to Lutnick’s former leadership of Cantor Fitzgerald, which served as a placement agent for the deal. Concerns center on whether Lutnick’s government position and family ties—specifically his sons' involvement in the companies—could create an improper overlap in a deal involving strategically vital minerals.
