Commercial fires cause major losses in Benin and Senegal

Multiple significant fires have caused substantial commercial damage in West African regions. In Abomey-Calavi, Benin, a fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, destroying several businesses along a busy road in Akassato. Affected establishments included a mattress manufacturing workshop, an informal fuel station, and a money transfer kiosk. No casualties were reported, and firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control. This incident follows a similar fire in Porto-Novo on August 7, where a fuel tanker spill led to a large-scale blaze.

In Guédiawaye, Senegal, a devastating fire destroyed the Lô Multimédia warehouse in the Ravin neighborhood on a Saturday night. The fire rapidly consumed a large stock of electronic and IT equipment, including professional photocopiers and regulators. The business owner, Mr. Lô, estimates the financial losses at over 300 million FCFA. Firefighters from Guédiawaye and reinforcements from Dakar worked until early the following morning to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent Le Ravin Night-Club.
