Commercial fires cause significant damage in Burundi and Madagascar

Major commercial fires have caused significant property damage in Bujumbura, Burundi, and Toliara, Madagascar.

In Bujumbura, a violent fire broke out on Friday morning at the ‘Ndayizamba’ and ‘Le Parisien’ commercial galleries. The Burundi National Police and the Red Cross responded to contain the blaze. Burundi’s Vice-President, Prosper Bazombanza, visited the site and expressed condolences to affected traders. He urged economic operators to invest in insurance to protect against such disasters and called on building owners to adhere to urban planning and safety standards, specifically regarding emergency access routes.

In Toliara, Madagascar, a fire destroyed several shops in the Ankilifaly area. Preliminary reports suggest a short circuit may have caused the blaze, which spread rapidly through wooden and metal structures. Witnesses noted that tangled electrical wiring and a lack of local fire hydrants complicated the response. The local municipal fire service, operating with only one water truck, faced challenges in extinguishing the flames quickly.
