Commercial Street Bridge in Pittsburgh Replaced via Record 24‑Hour Slide

A 10,000‑tonne replacement bridge for Pittsburgh’s Commercial Street Bridge was installed in under 24 hours using Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques. Engineers assembled the new structure beside the existing bridge, demolished the old one, and slid the 102‑ft bridge into place with a specialized hydraulic skidding system, completing the move in two days.

The rapid installation reduced the expected multi‑year traffic disruption to a single 17‑day closure, allowing the Interstate 376 Parkway East to reopen ahead of schedule. Mammoet managed the skidding operation, while PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll and Mammoet Engineering Team Lead Mark Lane highlighted the method’s ability to minimise driver impact and deliver a successful project.
