Commercial truck accidents cost industry $152 billion annually
Commercial vehicle accidents result in an estimated $152 billion in annual aggregate losses for the industry. According to data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Safety Council (NSC), the financial impact extends far beyond immediate insurance claims.
Under the FMCSA’s updated Crash Cost Methodology, a single injury crash involving a large truck averages $326,810, while fatal crashes can exceed $15.23 million. Additional business costs include cargo destruction, missed delivery service level agreements, customer churn, and long-term brand damage.
Factors contributing to these risks include driver fatigue and high-pressure environments, with typical drivers covering 8,000 to 13,000 miles per month. While many fleets implement dashcams to manage safety, the high volume of video events often overwhelms safety managers, leading them to use video only for post-accident evidence rather than proactive prevention.
