Commerzbank launches 1.2 billion euro share buyback program

Commerzbank has initiated a planned share buyback program, with the board deciding to repurchase up to approximately 1.2 billion euros worth of its own shares by February 10, 2027. CEO Bettina Orlopp stated that the bank intends to fulfill its commitments to shareholders despite the expected takeover by UniCredit.

The bank's stock has recently surpassed the 40 euro mark, approaching record highs. This growth is increasingly driven by operational performance rather than solely by interest rate fluctuations. While net interest income stagnated at 2.06 billion euros in the second quarter due to lower interest rates in Poland, total quarterly earnings rose by 9% to 3.3 billion euros.

Growth has been supported by a 7% increase in commission income, reaching 1.08 billion euros, fueled by securities business, bond issuances, and payment services. Additionally, the bank's cost-to-income ratio has improved as revenue growth outpaces the rise in expenses, which increased by less than 2% in the first half of the year.
