Commewijne prepares for economic growth through new port projects
The Commewijne district in Suriname is entering a period of significant economic expansion driven by investments in the oil and gas sectors and tourism. District Commissioner Rajiv Ramsahai announced that two major port projects are currently in the preparatory stages: the Dordt Marine Support Base at Lust en Rust and the Commewijne Port Facility N.V. (Comport) in Nieuw-Amsterdam.
These maritime developments are expected to create substantial employment. For one port, 300 personnel have already been selected, while another project has already hired 50 employees. Beyond the energy sector, the district's plantation history continues to attract daily tourists, prompting investors to develop new facilities for visitors.
This rapid development is expected to lead to increased urbanization over the next five years. To manage the growing population and traffic density, Ramsahai noted the necessity of a second bridge to complement the Jules Wijdenboschbrug. While the growth presents challenges for land use and infrastructure, officials aim to maintain effective spatial planning to balance housing, agriculture, and industrial needs.
