Commission proposes memorial for victims of communist regime in Croatia

The Commission for Determining the Fate of Victims of Crimes Committed Immediately After World War II has proposed that the Croatian government establish a memorial site dedicated to victims of the communist regime. Ivan Penava, president of the Commission and leader of the Homeland Movement, stated that the proposal aims to provide dignity and remembrance for tens of thousands of victims of the Yugoslav Communist Party.

Potential locations for the memorial, such as Mirogoj, Macelj, or Udbina, are still under discussion. Penava emphasized that the commission seeks a systematic approach to addressing what he described as a 'death industry' and a deep historical trauma within Croatian society. He argued that all forms of totalitarianism, including Nazism and Fascism, must be treated with equal scrutiny.

In addition to the memorial, the Commission is proposing to strengthen the institutional and legislative frameworks for investigating crimes committed in 1945 and 1946. The Commission also plans to propose a declaration to the European Parliament condemning communist actions during the second half of the 20th century.
