Common Ash named Tree of the Year 2027

The Dr. Silvius Wodarz Foundation has selected the common ash as the Tree of the Year for 2027. The foundation, which has made this annual selection since 1989, aims to highlight the ecological, cultural, and forestry importance of native tree species.

The decision comes amid a dramatic decline in ash populations in Germany since the early 2000s. This decline is primarily attributed to Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, a fungal pathogen from East Asia that has spread across much of Europe, damaging or killing many trees.

While no complete resistance to the fungus is currently known, scientific research indicates that some trees show better resilience due to genetic factors. The common ash is one of the largest native deciduous trees, reaching heights of up to 40 meters, and is valued for its wood in manufacturing tools, sports equipment, furniture, and parquet flooring.
