Common beverages may cause digestive issues when consumed on an empty stomach

Health reports from Verywell Health and Yahoo Health warn that consuming certain common beverages on an empty stomach can lead to gastrointestinal issues, including increased acidity, bloating, and nausea.

Coffee may stimulate gastric acid secretion, potentially worsening heartburn and acid reflux. Additionally, caffeine absorption is faster without food, which may trigger cortisol release, leading to increased anxiety, rapid heartbeat, or digestive distress like cramps and diarrhea, particularly in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome.

Citrus juices, such as orange juice, are rich in vitamin C but contain natural acids that can irritate the stomach lining or exacerbate symptoms for those with ulcers or acid reflux. Experts suggest consuming these juices alongside a meal to mitigate acidity.

Furthermore, nutritionist Kristen Carli warns against drinking carbonated beverages or sparkling water on an empty stomach. The carbon dioxide can expand in the stomach and push acidic contents into the esophagus, causing bloating and chest burn. It is recommended to consume these slowly or avoid them entirely to prevent discomfort.
