Common factors contributing to cryptocurrency investor losses

Research into cryptocurrency markets highlights several recurring factors that lead to financial losses for investors. Key drivers include poor market timing, such as purchasing assets after significant price surges, and excessive risk-taking in highly volatile small-cap altcoins or memecoins.

Other significant contributors to loss include the use of leverage, which can lead to rapid liquidations, and investing capital that cannot be afforded to be lost. Behavioral issues, such as overtrading and attempting to time every market movement, also play a role. Additionally, security risks—including scams, fraud, and exchange failures—can result in the total loss of funds regardless of market performance.

Data from organizations such as the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and Chainalysis underscore these risks. The BIS estimated that between 73% and 81% of retail crypto investors lost money on their initial Bitcoin investment during its study period, while Chainalysis estimated that scams and fraud accounted for at least $14 billion in losses.
