Common foods linked to blood vessel blockage and health risks

Certain frequently consumed foods can significantly damage blood vessels and increase health risks, according to dietary concerns. Two major categories identified include pickled vegetables and processed meats.

Pickled and salted vegetables can lead to excessive sodium intake. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a daily limit of no more than 5 grams of salt. High sodium levels cause the body to retain water, increasing blood volume and blood pressure, which can eventually harden blood vessels and form plaque.

Processed meats, such as sausages, ham, bacon, and salted meats, pose additional risks. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the WHO, classified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen in 2015. Beyond cancer risks, these products often contain high levels of salt, nitrites, and saturated fats, which contribute to hypertension and elevated cholesterol levels.
