Common honors Harry Belafonte’s legacy in Brooklyn concert

Thousands gathered at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park on August 28 to honor the legacy of the late entertainer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte. The event, presented by BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! and The Action Lab, featured performances by Common, Adi Oasis, La Bruja, and Ana Tijoux.

Common was named the 2025 Harry Belafonte Fellow by The Action Lab. The fellowship is designed to recognize and support artists who utilize their creative platforms to advance grassroots social justice initiatives, community engagement, and movement strategy. The program aims to continue Belafonte’s tradition of connecting popular culture with humanitarian causes and racial equality activism.
