Common houseplants pose risks to children and pets
Certain popular indoor plants can pose health risks to children and pets if ingested or if their sap comes into contact with skin and eyes.
Dieffenbachia, often chosen for its large green leaves, contains calcium oxalate crystals. Ingestion can lead to pain, burning sensations, and swelling of the mouth and tongue, as well as swallowing difficulties. Monstera is also noted for containing these crystals, which can cause oral swelling, increased salivation, and digestive issues if chewed. To mitigate risks, it is recommended to place these plants in locations inaccessible to small children and domestic animals.
