Common medical causes for waking up with headaches
Medical experts have identified several common causes for waking up with headaches, ranging from lifestyle factors to underlying medical conditions. One frequent cause is cervicogenic headache, which originates from neck pain often caused by uncomfortable sleeping positions.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a significant contributor. This condition involves repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep, which can lead to fragmented rest and morning headaches characterized by a dull pressure on both sides of the head. According to a meta-analysis in Sleep Medicine Review, approximately 33% of individuals with obstructive sleep apnea report morning headaches. Other symptoms associated with sleep apnea include daytime drowsiness, dry mouth, and insomnia.
Other potential triggers include migraines, which can be exacerbated by insufficient or interrupted sleep, and bruxism. Additionally, irregular sleep schedules that conflict with circadian rhythms, such as those experienced by night-shift workers, can also contribute to morning cephalalgia.
