Common methods used in mobile and banking fraud schemes
Fraudulent schemes targeting mobile users and bank accounts are utilizing various tactics to exploit victims. In mobile-based scams, criminals often use WhatsApp or M-Pesa to create a sense of urgency through fake SMS messages claiming money was sent by mistake, requests for WhatsApp verification codes, or impersonating family members with new numbers. Other common methods include fake prize notifications, fraudulent job offers requiring upfront fees, and impersonation of bank or service provider employees requesting PINs.
A different type of banking fraud has emerged that does not rely on traditional phishing or skimming. In these cases, criminals obtain card data through the dark web or via complicit merchants during legitimate transactions. These stolen details are used remotely for online purchases or withdrawals, often making the theft difficult to detect until the victim reviews their bank statement days later. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend verifying balances through official apps rather than SMS, never sharing verification codes, and monitoring bank statements regularly.
