Key Summer Garden Watering Mistakes to Avoid

Summer heat, wind, dry soil and sudden showers can stress plants if watering is mistimed. The most common errors are: watering when the sun is intense, which causes rapid evaporation and leaf burn; shallow, frequent watering that moistens only the top 1–2 cm of soil; neglecting mulch, which lets soil heat up and lose moisture; overlooking the rapid drying of potting mix in containers; and over‑watering before a vacation, leaving plants without water for days. Recommended practices include irrigating early in the morning or late evening, applying deep water 2–3 times per week, using mulch such as bark or straw to retain moisture, choosing light‑colored containers for pots, and employing drip‑irrigation or water‑filled bags for self‑sufficient watering while away.
